What would you look like in Jedi garb? How would you do in lightsaber training? Disney's new Star Wars app makes using the force as easy as tapping buttons on your phone; no Obi-Wan required.
Disney's new app, available for iOS and Android — is chock-full of Star Wars news, GIFs and a surprisingly engaging augmented reality lightsaber game. But the coolest feature lets you take selfies with characters and backgrounds from classic Star Wars locations. It'll even give you your the local weather in Star Wars context (hot out? Yep, feels like Tatooine).
And of course, there's a countdown to the December debut of the next movie in the franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Upon launching the app for the first time, it asks users to choose the light side of the force, the dark side or a droid (like R2D2.) Don't worry, if you choose the light side you can still pull an Anakin later and change over to the dark side (or become a droid). The features are all the same no matter which you choose, but the app will be themed differently.
One gripe, however, is that despite being a brand new app, it's only optimized to look best on older 4-inch iPhones; it'll look stretched out on the larger-screened iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, so it won't look as sharp for anyone with newer devices.
The app is clearly marketing material aimed at pleasing dedicated Star Wars fans and reminding them about upcoming sequels. The franchise is being rebooted by Disney after they bought Lucasfilm in 2012. The aforementioned Force Awakens will be joined by an as-of-yet unnamed sequel fans are calling Star Wars: Episode VIII is in 2017. Another movie, presumably called Star Wars: Episode VIV will round out the new trilogy at some point in the future.
The app comes a day after Disney announced fan-favorite Han Solo would get his own spin-off series of movies.
